John Harrison Streicker,
Chairman and Founder
1942 - 2022

On March 10, 2022, John H. Streicker, Chairman and founder of Sentinel Real Estate, passed away following an illness. All of us in the Sentinel family will remember John as more than just a wonderful leader and colleague; he was also a friend, mentor and advisor.

John devoted his life to making Sentinel one of the largest apartment owners in the United States. Beyond the financial success of the company, it was important to him that it reflected his professional values of respect, trust and honesty. He believed that each client, partner and team member deserved these courtesies. He was also immensely dedicated to the deep and longstanding relationships that he had cultivated over the years and took pride in creating value for each of our esteemed partners and clients.

John’s accomplishments at Sentinel were many. After joining the firm as Chief Investment Officer in 1976, he acquired the company and became President in 1988. At a time when multifamily investments were just becoming an institutional property sector, Sentinel, under John’s leadership, was an early mover in the sector. John oversaw significant growth in the firm from $1.6 billion in assets under management to the $9.0 billion Sentinel manages today. Most recently, Sentinel has expanded its portfolio and network of institutional relationships, as well as taken a leading role in the rapidly growing build to rent sector in Australia.

Outside of real estate, John had many passions, including philanthropy, sailing and winemaking. Formed in 1997, The Streicker Foundation supports a wide variety of charitable organizations, including educational, cultural and medical/research organizations. He also founded the Streicker Center at Temple Emanu-El in New York to offer programs that engage the community and explore various aspects of Jewish culture.

He served under President Bush in the years following 9/11 on the President's Intelligence Advisory Board (PFIAB) and was a member of the Board of Directors of the Business Executives for National Security (BENS). John was also member of the boards of the National Association of Real Estate Investment Managers and the Yale Law School Foundation. At Princeton University he endowed numerous scholarships and the Streicker Bridge. He served on the board of the Graduate Center Foundation of the City University of New York and the Board of Directors of the Association of Foreign Investors in Real Estate (AFIRE), as Chairman of Manhattan's Community Board #5 and as adjunct professor at Yale's School of Organization and Management.

In Australia, he was Board Director of the Australian American Leadership Dialogue (AALD), a private diplomatic initiative formed to bring together Australian and American leaders to better the bilateral relationship. He also founded the Friends of Australian Wildlife Foundation and owned two wineries in the Margaret River region – Clairault Wines and Streicker Wines.

John was an avid and enthusiastic sailor who deeply enjoyed his time on the water and at regattas. A longtime member of the Milford Yacht Club and competitive racer, he took great pride in his crew’s many victories.

While we are deeply saddened by his passing, we can all take great lessons from the passion, devotion and generosity with which he lived. The mark of a true leader is the impact you leave on those whose lives you touch and John’s influence will be felt across the world. As we look to the future, we will honor his legacy by continuing to operate the firm according to his guiding principles of trust, honesty and respect.
